Vancouver photographer, Lensdude on wedding photography
Shopping for a photogapher should be as simple as shopping for laundry detergent at your local supermarket. You can base your choice on snazzy packaging, advertising campaigns, recommendations from friends or what's in the box. What you should find in the box are the necessary ingredients that will meet or exceed your expectations before you heft that photographer into your shopping cart.
Will your whites come out white or will they be really white? Let's not get into grass stains right now... let's just leave this analogy and talk about your wedding.
The dynamic elements involved with your decision will include; the photographer's portfolio, their proximity to the event, total bottom line cost and how comfortable you feel with their manner and personality. Using the point system it's time to begin the legwork, with mouse and database you can start with online photographers.
First you would make a list of all qualified photographers in your city and give them one point for proximity to the event. For every element the photographer meets, give them another point depending on the weight you give to each element.
Is proximity more important than portfolio? Is price more important than professionalism? Is an instant raport with the photographer essential?
The location of the wedding versus the photographer for some is an issue. However, if you like a photographer's work and if they are willing to travel, then make the arrangements. The portfolio of the photographer is key, or rather, do you like what you see? Is the majority of the work traditional or photojournalistic? Can the photographer give you what you want? Memories of your wedding will last a lifetime and the pictures will be seen by generations to come. Some would argue here that the "best" is the most expensive. Most of what we perceive as the "best" is merely the most marketed. The "best" photographer should be someone who's work and manner are comfortable to you.
Going back to the original analogy, that would be how white your chosen laundry detergent gets your whites. Even with all the planning done ahead of time, the actual big day can produce a small level of stress (this would be the grass stains part). The photographer should not be a contributing factor in the level of stress you feel. If you have chosen the right photographer for your wedding then you can be comfortable with communicating your needs and expectations. The professional photographer will meet with you before your wedding to discuss the types and locations of specific pictures you request. On your big day the photographer will know exactly what moment to photograph and perhaps be spontaneous enough to capture those moments not expected.
Photographs depict defining moments in our lives. Our photojournalistic/formal photos of your Wedding, Graduation, Anniversary or other special event will be reminders of that spectacular day in your life for generations to come.
