The Wedding Day Garter
Throwing the garter began in France. Sections of the bridal attire were considered to be lucky. At the wedding, the bride would throw the garter to the guests and whoever caught it could expect good luck. Additionally the man who catches it is thought to be the next to marry. The garter is placed on the brides right leg, just above the knee. The bride may choose to wear both a garter to throw as well as a garter that she would keep.
The DJ or band will invite a group of single men (of dating age, not generally young boys) out to the center of the dance floor. The groom will seat his bride down either on a chair or on his best man’s knee in the middle of the dance floor. The groom will modestly reach up to his bride’s knee to retrieve the garter that she has been wearing. The groom will then turn his back to the group of single men and toss her garter towards the them. The gentleman that catches the garter will dance with the woman that catches the bouquet. It is also common for the recipients of the bouquet and garter to have a photograph taken with the bride and groom. See also reception proceedings.
