The mother of the bride typically chooses the style and formality of her gown. She will discuss her choices with the mother of the groom before making a final decision. The groom’s mother will choose a similar style gown as the mother of the bride. Keep in mind that a similar style and same length will compliment the mothers and are most attractive in video and pictures.
If one of the mothers is in mourning, she is not to wear black to the wedding. The focus on the wedding day is the bride and groom, not the sadness of the mother. She may choose to wear gray or lavender instead.
Coats, stoles or wraps may be placed at the mothers seats by an usher upon their arrival. They are not to be worn down the aisle as it will take away from the beauty of their gown.
If either the bride or groom has a stepmother that they feel close to who will be attending the wedding, it would be thoughtful for the bride or groom to notify her of what style, formality and color gown that the mothers will be wearing. This will give her a guideline as to what she may choose for her own attire.
