You’re planning a beautiful wedding and now it’s time to select the outfits for your Flower Girls and Ring Bearers. What do you choose? A specialist in dressing children can offer so many lovely choices. Here are some of the tips we often offer:
White or ivory Flower Girls’ dresses and Ring Bearer suits are always darling. But not all whites are created equal! If you are choosing white for the children, your gown dictates which white is required.
Silk is always slightly off white even when called “white”. When your gown is silk, select silk, off-white or color outfits for the children. If it is bright white, absolutely avoid children’s outfits in silk or off white. Never mix the two – the one wearing silk or off-white will be the unfortunate one looking dingy.
A perfect color match to your adult attendants will require ordering both adult and child attire from the same manufacturer together from the same dye lot. You can usually order matching fabric and have the children’s outfits made custom. Plan many months in advance if this is the option you choose; your seamstress will need several months’ notice.
Rather than matching, consider a coordinating shade of the adults’ attire such as pink against burgundy or light blue against dark blue. Or use the color of your flowers for the children. This can create a striking effect. Dresses are also available with skirts filled with silk flower-petals - a sweet and very pretty look for younger girls especially.
You can add color to white or ivory outfits for the children. Many dresses can be purchased with colored sashes. If the right color sash is not available, purchase wide satin ribbon from any fabric or craft store or have your bridal salon order additional fabric to match your Maids’ gowns and ask them to make sashes to match.
A small flower bouquet on a safety clasp can be pinned at the waistline or in the bow in back. Voila! Instant color coordination.
You can certainly select a white or a black dress for a black-and-white wedding, but consider a black/white combination such as a print or check for a youthful effect. A sheer black dress with white lining is a soft yet striking look. A black dress with the skirt filled with flower petals to match your flowers or in white is another charming approach.
The boys can be dressed to coordinate with the Flower Girls or with the adult gentlemen in your Wedding. You can add tiny details such as a colored bow tie or cummerbund to coordinate with the rest of your wedding party.
Enjoy your beautiful wedding!
